This digital image was taken of an ancient native Chinquapin Oak that breaks the view from George Washington's Mount Vernon home to the Potomac River. This tree has lived on the banks of the Potomac for over 200 years. In 1783, after eight years as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, George Washington resigned his military commission and headed back to Mount Vernon to resume his life as a farmer and landowner of more than 8,000 acres in Virginia. He planted a variety of trees but this old craggy shaped tree would have been a focal point as he and Martha sat on their back porch or down near the banks of the Potomac River. A glorious old wonder of nature!
