Description
A textured and antiqued digital image of the Star of India, an active sailing ship, moored at the Maritime Museum in San Diego California. I love the contrast of the beautiful skyscrappers and this ancient ship. A little history: The Star of India is the world's oldest active sailing ship. "She began her life on the stocks at Ramsey Shipyard in the Isle of Man in 1863. Iron ships were experiments of sorts then, with most vessels still eing built of wood. Within five months of laying her keel, the ship was launched into her element. She bore the name Euterpe, after the Greek muse of music and poetry In 1871 she was purchased by theShaw Savill line of London and embarked on a quarter century of hauling emigrants to New Zealand, sometimes also touching Australia, California, and Chile." Interesting Facts: Launched five days before Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, sailed twenty-one times around the world, never fitted with auxillary power, went aground in Hawaii, became an "American" ship by Act of Congress, trapped in ice in Alaska, still sails in the ocean by a volunteer crew each November, a book on Star of India's history is available at the Maritime Musuem's online store. Ship Statistics - LOA 212', Sparred Length 280', Beam 35', Maximum Draft 21.5', Gross Tonnage 1318, Rig Bark. (sited from www.sdmaritime.org/star-of-india/)
